FAQS

What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Shaken Baby Syndrome refers to a specific form of child abuse that occurs when an infant or young child is violently shaken, causing their brain to move back and forth inside their skull. The intense motion can cause brain injuries, such as swelling, bleeding, and damage to brain tissue.

What is Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)?

Abusive Head Trauma is a broader term that encompasses any traumatic brain injury caused by physical abuse, including violent shaking (which causes SBS) as well as other forms of head trauma, such as blunt force trauma (striking the head or other forms of injury to the brain).

What are the Differences Between SSB and AHT?

SBS is a subset of AHT and specifically refers to the injuries caused by violent shaking. AHT is a more general term that includes injuries from shaking as well as other forms of head trauma caused by abuse (e.g., hitting or slamming the head).
